What it is
Travel Together Everywhere, a Kolkata heritage travel group, runs this day trip to two of Bengal's weaving centres, booked through Immersive Trails. It leaves from the K C Das shop at Esplanade at 8 AM on Sunday 15 November, lasts about 12 hours and returns to the same place, in an AC vehicle. In Phulia the group visits weavers' neighbourhoods and working looms, sees how a saree goes from yarn to finished cloth, learns about Phulia's Tangail and Jamdani weaving and its link with Krittibas Ojha, the poet of the Bengali Ramayana, and calls at handloom cooperatives.
In Shantipur it looks at the town's own weaving techniques and designs. Meeting weavers depends on who is available that day. Lunch, tea and snacks and a guide are included, and the tour is led in Bengali, Hindi and English.
A group exhibition curated by Rashmee Pal Chouteau on how material and process can hold time, with works by Debasish Mukherjee, Megha Joshi, Pooja Iranna, Ruchika Wason Singh, Samindranath Majumdar and Sheetal Gattani at Ganges Art Gallery.
Rahul Buski's first solo exhibition at Art Exposure: large paintings that draw on the life of his Paniya Adivasi community in Wayanad, Kerala, and on protests against land grabs. The title comes from a poem by Abhay Xaxa.
Sculptures by Surendranath (Suren) De (1930 to 1982), a Santiniketan sculptor trained under Ramkinkar Baij, shown together for the first time in decades. Presented by Art Exposure.
Vivada Cruise's Durga Puja dinner cruise on the Hooghly: three hours aboard the M.V. Matsakanya with a Bengali buffet dinner, live music and dance. It sails every evening from 10 to 20 October.
