Exhibition · Kolkata
Sat 12 Sep – Sat 31 Oct. Akar Prakar. In English.
This exhibition brings together the artistic practices of Vivan Sundaram and Tapan Bhattacharyya, who formed a close friendship after meeting in 1997 when Bhattacharyya assisted Sundaram with his History Project at the Victoria Memorial. Conceived by Geeta Kapur and realised by Reena Lath and Abhijit Lath of Akar Prakar, the showcase pairs smaller sculptural objects from Sundaram's 2013 Postmortem series with Bhattacharyya's watercolours, gouaches and pen-and-ink works. Sundaram's pieces feature fibreglass body organs and mixed-media sculptures that explore fractured forms, while Bhattacharyya's works present an absurd repertoire of mutated, ambulatory creature-like figurines.
The exhibition highlights the distinct yet connected visual worlds of the two artists, celebrating a long-standing creative dialogue.
